Thanks & credits

None of this is ours. All of it is theirs.

A newsroom like this one is a borrower. We do not write the stories, take the photographs or film the video: we read what other people publish, decide what belongs on the page, and send you to them. This page exists to say so properly — every wire we follow, every service we lean on, and the rules we hold ourselves to while using them.

Why this page exists

Most aggregators treat their sources as plumbing: invisible pipes that carry text to a page. We think that is the wrong way round. The reporting is the work. Somebody got on a train, sat in a courtroom, called a regulator three times, waited outside a hospital, checked a figure with a second source and then wrote it down in a way that a stranger could understand. That is expensive, slow and often unglamorous, and it is the only reason a news page exists at all.

Everything we do sits on top of that work. We choose, arrange, cut down for the screen and link. When the choice is good, the reader finds the right story quickly; when it is bad, nothing we add can rescue it. So the first thank-you on this page goes to the reporters, photographers, editors, sub-editors, fact-checkers, translators, camera operators, data journalists and desk staff at every publication named below — including the ones whose stories we did not pick today, and the ones whose work is behind a paywall we cannot cross.

We are also grateful to the smaller, stranger outlets: the trade press that understands a supply chain better than any national paper, the regional titles that notice a factory closing two years before anyone else, the specialist blogs that explain a chip architecture in plain words, and the volunteer-run feeds that survive on goodwill. A newsroom made only of the biggest names would be a worse newsroom.

How we use a wire

Every publisher on the list below offers what is normally called a feed: a machine-readable list of its recent stories containing a headline, a short summary, usually a picture, a publication time and a link. It is published openly, on purpose, so that readers and other sites can follow the news without scraping the page.

We read that feed, keep the headline, the summary, the picture and the link, and throw away everything else. When a reader clicks a headline they go to the publisher's own article, on the publisher's own site, with the publisher's own advertising and branding around it. We do not rewrite, we do not translate without saying so, we do not present a summary as if it were the article, and we never put a publisher's name on anything they did not write.

Where a story can be read inside our site through the reading view, the text is fetched from the publisher at the moment you open it, rendered once for you, and not stored: we keep no archive of anybody's prose. The reading view carries the publisher's name at the top, a link to the original at the top and at the bottom, a plain statement that the words are theirs, and noindex so that search engines never treat our copy of their page as a substitute for the real thing.

If you are a publisher and you would rather we did not show your summaries or pictures at all, write to [email protected] and we will remove the wire, usually the same day. No argument, no negotiation, no invoice.

Every wire we follow

The directory below is generated from our live source list, so it is always accurate: currently 67 wires across 8 desks, of which 67 answered on the last refresh and 1184 stories are on the wire as you read this. The tools and services we lean on

A small site can still need a surprising amount of machinery. These are the services that make the newsroom work, all of them free or open, and none of them holding anything of yours.

Feed conversion relays

Several of the world's best newsrooms publish behind networks we cannot reach directly. Rather than give up on them, we ask two public conversion services to fetch those feeds and hand us the result as JSON: rss2json and feed2json. They do the fetching and the parsing; we do the choosing. Thank you to the people who run those services out of the generosity that used to define the web, and who put up with an unusual amount of traffic from one small newsroom. We deliberately pace our requests, cache results for minutes rather than seconds, and convert only a few new feeds at a time, because a free service should not be punished for being useful.

Market data

The tape at the top of the front page is not ours either. Index levels come from CNBC's public quote service, with Eastmoney as a fallback; crypto prices come from Coinlore, with blockchain.info and mempool.space behind it; exchange rates come from Frankfurter, which republishes the European Central Bank's reference rates. Every one of them is free and key-less, and every one of them can fail: when they do, the tape shows the last good reading and a timestamp instead of an invention. A number that cannot be sourced should not be printed.

What we promise, and what we refuse

We link out. Every headline leads to the publisher's page. The reading view is a convenience, never a replacement, and it is only offered where the publisher's own page can be fetched and rendered honestly.

We name our sources. Every card carries the publication's short label; every article page names the publication again, with its address.

We do not rewrite. A summary on our page is the publisher's own summary, trimmed for length and nothing else. We do not add spin, we do not remove caveats, we do not turn a careful "may" into a confident "will".

We do not bypass paywalls. If a page asks for a subscription, the reader sees a subscription wall, or a message from us saying the text could not be shown. We do not keep copies, we do not use credentials that are not ours, and we do not pretend a paywalled article is free.

We do not sell attention. No advertising, no sponsored posts, no affiliate links, no tracking pixels, no third-party analytics, no cookie banner because there are no cookies to consent to. The only thing we store in your browser is a note that you closed the notice, and a link can clear it.

We correct in public. If we mislabel a source, mistranslate a headline, break a page or put a story on the wrong desk, tell us and it will be fixed, and where the mistake mattered we will say that it was fixed.

On pictures, video and the things we cannot show

Photographs and video belong to the people who made them, and they are usually served from a delivery network that has opinions about who may look at them. Where we can fetch a picture we deliver it from our own address, so the page works on a slow connection; where we cannot, the card falls back to a plain coloured tile with the publication's name on it rather than showing you a broken image icon. That fallback is not a bug: it is us being honest about what we could not deliver.

Video is the same story with more moving parts. A few wires publish video as a feed; most publish it inside pages we cannot reach. Where a video is embedded, the player is the platform's own, and if your network blocks that platform you will get a black rectangle and a link — again, honest rather than clever.

None of this is anyone's fault in particular. It is simply what the web looks like from where we read it, and the notice at the top of the front page says so in plain words.

The standing topics, and the people who keep them honest

Our topic pages are not edited by hand. They are matched against every headline and summary we carry, which means they inherit both the breadth and the blind spots of the wires themselves. Artificial intelligence looks well covered because the wires are obsessed with it; badminton looks thin because almost nobody publishes a badminton feed we can reach. We would rather show you an honest thin column than pad it with press releases.

Sport gets its own desk for a simple reason: a football result and a wheelchair-basketball result are both sport, and both deserve to be findable without wading through a general feed. Our sport page sorts stories into football, basketball, badminton, table tennis and swimming, and flags the disability version of each. Thank you to the Paralympic desks and the specialist disability-sport writers who make that column possible at all; they are working with less resource than almost anyone else in the industry and producing more per pound than most.

Frequently asked, honestly answered

Do you write any of this?

No. We write the framing, the headings and pages like this one. The journalism is other people's, and it carries their name.

Why is a story missing from a topic it obviously belongs to?

Topics match words in the headline and summary, not the full article. A piece that only mentions its subject in the fourth paragraph will not match, and we would rather miss it than quietly fetch and index the whole article.

Why does one card show a picture and the next one not?

Because some image servers answer our request and some do not. We do not fake a picture, and we do not show a grey placeholder pretending to be one.

Why does the front page look different every time I reload it?

Each visit gets a fresh edition: the newest stories are still at the top, but the order inside that band is shuffled, so a reader who checks in often sees a different page rather than the same photograph all day.

Can I read a whole article here?

Sometimes. Where the publisher's page can be fetched and parsed, a reading view shows the body text inside our layout, with links to the original at the top and the bottom. Where it cannot — paywalls, JavaScript-only pages, blocked servers — you get the publisher's page or a clear explanation.

Where do the numbers in the tape come from?

CNBC and Eastmoney for indices, Coinlore (with blockchain.info and mempool.space as fallbacks) for crypto, and Frankfurter for currencies. Updated every few minutes, never invented, never smoothed.

Do you keep logs of what I read?

No. There is no analytics script on any page, no tracking pixel and no third-party tag, and we do not build profiles of readers. What you read here is your own business.

Who pays for this?

Nobody, in the commercial sense: there is no advertising, no subscription and no company behind it with something to sell you. It is run by the editorial team itself.

How do I get my publication removed?

Send one line to [email protected]. We will drop the wire and delete what we cached from it, and we will not ask why.

How do I suggest a publication?

Same address. A feed URL is ideal. We will try it, and if it works and it is not already covered, it goes on the list with a credit on this page.

A last thank-you

To the people who still read past the first paragraph: thank you. A newsroom of any size exists for maybe twenty thousand people who care about the difference between a claim and a finding, and every one of them is worth the trouble. To the librarians, the fact-checkers, the local reporters, the stringers, the photographers who wait nine hours for one frame, the subs who catch the error at midnight, and the readers who write in to say a headline is wrong: this page is for you.

And to the publications listed above — the big ones with legal departments and the small ones run out of a spare room — thank you for publishing openly enough that a small newsroom in a different country can point at your work and say: read this. We will keep sending people your way.
